How many subclasses of Parent visa?
There are main subclasses of Parent Visa available for parents who wish to migrate to Australia to be with their children. These are:
Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143): This visa also allows parents to live in Australia permanently but requires a higher financial commitment. The requirements for this visa include:
- The applicant must be sponsored by their child who is an eligible sponsor.
- The applicant must meet the balance of family test.
- The applicant must meet health and character requirements.
- A higher visa application charge is applicable for this visa.
Additionally, there is a temporary visa option for parents who wish to spend time with their children in Australia. It is called the Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173), which allows parents to stay in Australia for up to two years. This visa can be later transitioned to the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143) mentioned above.
The Contributory Parent (Temporary) Visa (Subclass 173) is suitable for applicants with limited financial capacity as it required lower visa application cost at the time of application than the Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 143).
Contributory Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 884/864): These subclasses are similar to Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173/143). However, the main differences are that:
- To be eligible for this visa, the applicant must meet the age requirement, which is generally being at the age of eligibility for the Age Pension in Australia.

- The application can be lodged onshore and the applicant is eligible for a bridging visa to stay in Australia during the whole process of visa assessment in stead of staying outside Australia like Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173/143)
Parent Visa (Subclass 103): This visa is for parents who have a child in Australia who is an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or eligible New Zealand citizen. It allows parents to live in Australia permanently. The requirements for this visa include:
- The applicant must be sponsored by their child who is an eligible sponsor.
- The applicant must meet the balance of family test, which means having at least half of their children residing permanently in Australia or more children living in Australia than in any other single country.
- The applicant must meet health and character requirements.
- One of advantages of this subclass is that the Visa application cost is much more lower, which is From AUD4,560.00 in comparison to AUD47,955 for Contributory Parent Visa (Subclass 173/143) or Contributory Aged Parent Visa (Subclass 884/864). However, the time of assessing of Parent Visa (Subclass 103) is significantly longer, which is up to 30 years, other than up to 12 years like above-mentioned subclasses.
Aged Parent visa (Subclass 804): This subclass is similar to Parent Visa (Subclass 103). However, it is designed for aged parent applicants, who should is eligible for a bridging visa to stay in Australia during the whole process of visa assessment in stead of staying outside Australia like Parent Visa (Subclass 103) to be eligible for this visa, the applicant must meet the age requirement, which is generally being at the age of eligibility for the Age Pension in Australia
For applicants who do not meet the requirement of balance of family test, another better option rather than a visitor visa is Sponsored Parent Visa Subclass (870).
